January will mark Allergen Aware Month in Foodservice and is a pledge by caterers to re-boot their allergen awareness, remind staff to be compliant with the law, refresh their training and get all employees re-focused on allergens.
This month marks three years since the EU law came in regarding food allergen labelling and Allergen Accredited businesses are reporting that more customers have some form of allergy or intolerance to certain ingredients. Today, 2% of people in the UK have a registered allergy.
The month aims to be the largest awareness campaign around allergens and brings the industry together to be global leaders in food allergen customer excellence. Allergen Accreditation provides free access to a kitchen checklist, information on allergens and best practice guides, as well as a resource pack.
Andy Jones, chair of the PS100 group, said: “Making people, including caterers, more aware of allergens with campaigns and material’s like this is essential in ensuring our staff are trained and kept up to date with current issues and legislation.”
