A group of 10 school chefs have been selected to compete for the title of LACA School Chef of the Year 2018 (SCOTY) on 8th March.
Following months of regional finals in which some of the country’s best school chefs battled it out over the stoves to discover one winner from each LACA region, the 10-strong line-up are now preparing for the main event. The national final will be held at Stratford upon Avon College in Warwickshire where they will prepare and cook a two-course meal suitable for 11-year-olds in school, that meets school food standards, uses locally-sourced ingredients and sustainable products, and costs no more than £1.30. They will have just 90 minutes to present their main course and dessert.
The winner of the competition, which will be announced at a dinner that evening, will receive a £1,000 cash prize, a work experience trip and an invitation to a calendar of high profile catering industry engagements during 2018-19. The two runners-up will receive cash prizes of £500 and £300 respectively.
“LACA School Chef of the Year is an excellent way of showing why all schools nationwide should be striving for a high quality school meals service,” said Tim Blowers, chair of LACA. “It’s a snapshot of the passion and professional expertise of today’s school chefs and of the commitment and culinary skill they put into producing high quality meals tirelessly every single day in schools across the country.
Every contestant who has taken part this year should be applauded and all should be recognised as inspirational role models for the food and beverage service in schools nationwide. My best wishes go to all ten of our 2018 National Finalists.”
