Elior is to ban plastic straws from 31st July and plastic stirrers from 30th September as part of its new Plastics Policy.
It is the latest business to remove plastic disposables from its sites in response to campaigns highlighting the damage of single use plastics on the oceans.
Elior expects to see annual consumption of more than one million plastic straws disappear from its sites almost overnight.
“The catering industry’s widespread use of disposable plastics – which rarely end up being recycled correctly – is of growing concern to Elior,” said Catherine Roe, chief executive of Elior UK. “Our new policy tackles the issue head on and lays out a three-year plan to achieve a sharp reduction in the volume of single-use of plastics in our supply chain and operations.”
Also in the plan are aims to reduce the use of disposable cups, cutlery and food containers by using the company’s ‘return and reuse’ schemes, and by using plant-based alternatives.
